This deep fried spiral shaped snack is made with different combinations of lentils, and spices, shaped into spirals and deep fried until golden brown.
This is one of the most common 'farsaan' (savories) available in Mumbai. Chakli or Murukku is a savoury snack of Indian origin. It is made up of Rice flour, Bengal gram and black gram. it has different variations and it is called in different names in different areas. - Prepare of rice flour.
- It's of gram flour.
- It's of ghee or butter.
- It's of water or as needed.
- Prepare of turmeric powder.
- You need of ajwain.
- It's of cumin seeds.
- It's of Red chilli powder.
- You need of asafoetida.
- It's of crushed chilli ginger.
- You need of sesame seeds.
- You need of Oil for deep frying.
- You need of Salt.
It is specially prepared during festivals like Diwali in many places like Tamil Nadu and Andhra pardesh. Chakli is very popular Indian savory snack which is mostly spiral in shape or sometimes long like sticks. Chakli is also known by other names like Chakri in Gujarati or Murukku in South Indian household. It gets a unique fun texture and shape by using a hand-held chakli maker or a murukku maker.
Chakli,Chakli or Murukku step by step
- Take a bowl add rice flour and gram flour mix it.add ajwain,cumin seeds, salt, turmeric,red chilli powder, sessame seeds,hing crushed chilli ginger and mix it.
- Take a small pan add butter or ghee and heat it. Now pour hot ghee to the flour mixture. Mix ghee to the flour with the help of spoon.
- Now mix it with the finger tip adding water as needed and knead dough. Dough should be little soft.
- Now take chakli maker grease it and place the portion of dough inside it.
- Tighten the lid and press the chakli maker to prepare chakli move in rounds to get spiral shape..break the dough and press last circle of the spiral Make it ready on the butter paper or plate.
- Now take a kadhai add oil and keep it for heating. Lift the chakri gently and slid it into the hot oil. Do not stir oftenly.dont over crowd kadhai while frying.(medium to high flame).
- Fry it golden brown. And drain them on tissue paper. Once it come to room temperature store it in a air tight container box.
- Serve chakri snack with tea.. and enjoy..
- Note- if chakri breaks while forming add 1 to 2 tbsp of water and knead the dough again and try..
